Date: February 12, 2005
Location: Franklin College, Franklin, Indiana
Host: Ministers Council of ABCIN/KY and ABC/GI
Facilitators: Sarah Hallstrand and Kate Harvey
Participants: 36 persons attended representing the regions of IN/KY, GI, and Rochester Genesee
Observations:
The day began with introductions and our facilitator capably setting ground rules and agenda. Kate Harvey then presented a recounting of Ministers Council history, especially as it pertains to issues of human sexuality. Several persons commented later on how much the national council has accomplished when it is not focused on this one particular subject.
We spent time in a lectio divina reflection on the Acts 15 passage with occasional forays into agenda driven comments and discussion. It was a time of looking deeply in the scripture and breathing new life into it. Many new insights were brought to the surface.
Following lunch individuals were given the opportunity to present two-minute personal statements or testimonies. The majority of those present shared their thoughts about this particular amendment. Those supporting the amendment focused on the authority of scripture and their interpretations of it. Those opposed to the amendment focused on Baptist principles of soul freedom, Biblical freedom, local church autonomy, their interpretations of scripture, and the inclusive message of Jesus Christ. Both “sides” also shared personal feelings.
The day concluded with seeking answers concerning common ground, statements to senators, and what a united future might look like. Those answers can be found in “Indiana Responses.”
Certainly no consensus was reached as this is a subject that seems to bring out passionate feelings, but it is hoped that persons heard one another’s deep concerns and that whatever the decision in August, we will still remain loving brothers and sisters in Christ.
