REPORT ON JERUSALEM COUNCIL PROCESS IN RHODE ISLAND

Facilitators: Lou George & Executive Director Kate Harvey

Participants: A total of 41 participants including two from Massachusetts and one from Connecticut .

Observations:

Lou George provided guidelines for the process and Kate Harvey gave background information. Their contributions were most helpful.
Engagement with Acts 15 using Lectio Divina was obviously a new experience for some. It generally went well with the occasional intrusion of personal agendas.

Participants represented the broad continuum of perspectives on the issue of homosexuality.

Participants shared openly and honestly. These sharings were received with respect.

Feedback:

• This is not our issue
• We need to speak to and not at one another
• Don’t assume/accuse that those with a different perspective don’t love those who are homosexual or don’t accept the authority of the Scripture
• The real issue is not the authority of Scripture but rather the interpretation of Scripture
• Why do some find it necessary to threaten withdrawal
• We are focusing on the wrong issue
• Need to discern God’s will and direction
• Need to identify and focus on real mission for region
